SUMMARY:Women in America Exhibit Tour
DESCRIPTION:The Women in America exhibit at the Mistlin Gallery was open for two days before being closed due to the additional orders and our high virus numbers. The exhibit celebrates the 19th Amendment and the success of Women In America. The Modesto branch of National League of American Pen Women participated with artists and writers pairing to respond to the other’s work in the ekphrastic method. The ekphrastic section of the show has both the art and writings of the works and some other individuals in addition to Pen Women participated with their ekphrastic work. In addition to the ekphrastic pairings of art there is a variety of different works relating to the theme of Women in America and the 19th Amendment. \nThough there is virtual tour information on the gallery website\, it is not the same as seeing the work in person. For this reason Henrietta Sparkman has organized private showings on these upcoming dates to see the exhibit: \nOctober 8th at 1:00pm\nOctober 15th at 1:00pm \nThe showing are for about 5-6 people in order to stay safe. Of course masks are necessary and physically distancing inside the gallery. Please contact the gallery director at ccaagallery@gmail.com in order to schedule your viewing of the show. \nThe gallery is located at 1015 J Street. If there is no available parking on the street\, you may park at the 10th Street parking facility only and receive a parking voucher at the gallery that is good for 4 hours.

SUMMARY:Words Worth Speaking: Brandon Leake and Angela Drew
DESCRIPTION:The MJC Library & Learning Center and the MJC Black Student Union invite you to a poetry event at the East Campus L & LC. \nFeaturing performers Brandon Leake and Angela Drew. \nBring a poem to read + submit your work to the WWS zine. \nBrandon Leake is an award-winning spoken word poet\, artistic educator\, and motivational speaker from Stockton\, CA. His creative blend of art\, charisma\, and passion tailored to his own unique personal narrative has taken him across the world as a speaker and performer. Brandon has performed in New Zealand\, Mexico\, Canada\, and 36 states around the country for his Dark Side Tour which promotes his first published poetry chapbook and his album Deficients: A Tale From My Dark Side\, a project rooted in transparency and healing. Brandon is also the founder and CEO of Called To Move – CTM\, an arts organization whose mission is to aid youth in self-actualization and personal development through poetry. Through Called to Move\, Brandon had led youth workshops around the world and in his hometown of Stockton. \nAngela Drew is a teacher\, mother\, poet\, and spoken word performer who has loved the rhythm of words for as long as she can remember. Born in Berkeley\, CA\, she began writing at age eight and has always understood that words have the power to soothe\, stir\, or solidify connection. Angela has performed at various venues throughout the Modesto\, Sacramento and Bay Areas\, including Modesto Junior College\, Modesto’s inaugural “Ill List Poetry Slam” at the State Theater\, the Gallo Center for the Arts\, in a Sankofa Community Theater production of The Journey—The African American Experience\, and at various other venues. SUMMARY:Writers Resist: Modesto Louder!
DESCRIPTION:Official Press Release: \nMODESTO WRITERS JOIN NATIONWIDE EFFORT TO “RE-INAUGURATE” DEMOCRACY \n“Writers Resist” Event Planned Locally\nfor January 15th\, 2017 \nMODESTO\, California\, December 31\, 2016 — A recent Facebook post unleashed a nationwide movement of writers organizing and promoting independent “Writers Resist” events to reclaim democracy planned for January 15\, 2017. \nThe flagship Writers Resist event\, founded by poet Erin Bilieu and co-sponsored by PEN America\, will feature famous literary figures braving January weather on the steps of the Public Library in New York City to read historic and contemporary writings on the ideals of democracy and free expression. Additional Writers Resist events\, are being held in Boston\, Los Angeles\, Oakland\, Austin\, Portland\, Omaha\, Seattle\, London\, Zurich\, Hong Kong\, and many more cities. \nLocally\, the City of Modesto’s poet laureate\, Stella Beratlis—along with writer Shanyn Vitti Avila and poet Elizabeth Sousa—is organizing Writers Resist: Modesto in response to concern during the recent Presidential campaign over public cynicism\, disdain for truthfulness\, and the unleashing of hatred and bigotry. Beratlis\, a longtime member of the League of Women Voters of Stanislaus County\, wanted to present an event which might galvanize Modesto audiences to become active in the civic life of the community\, support nonprofits that address social justice issues\, and network with like-minded people while having fun. \nThirty readers\, including Lillian Vallee\, Manny Moreno\, Trudy Wischemann\, Sam Pierstorff\, Flora Carter\, Paula Treick DeBoard\, Aishah Saleh\, Nancy Maya\, Chad Sokolovsky\, Optimism One\, and many others are scheduled to read their own work plus selections from the Constitution and from diverse voices addressing the ideals of democracy and free expression. \nThe Modesto event is free and open to the public and will be held at the Prospect Theater\, 1214 K Street in downtown Modesto on Sunday\, January 15\, starting at 6:30 pm. Doors open at 6:00 pm. Organizers will be raising funds at the event to support the work of the Modesto Peace/Life Center\, specifically to help underwrite its planned radio station. \nWriters and interested public who want to attend can visit www.writersresist.org for a list of cities holding readings. To contact local organizers\, please write to writersresistmodesto@gmail.com or call 209-613-9283 \n### \nWriters Resist (www.writersresist.org) is a national network of writers driven to #WriteOurDemocracy by defending the ideals of a free\, just and compassionate democratic society.  #WritersResist
